POLL: 51% OF FLORIDIANS SUPPORT OFFSHORE DRILLING

Interesting piece of news, one the environmentalist wackos hoped no one would notice: a majority of Florida residents — 51% — now support offshore drilling for oil and natural gas. Predictably, the driving force in the change in public opinion has been the skyrocketing costs of fuel.

Floridians support lifting a ban on oil drilling 100 miles or more from the state’s Gulf Coast beaches by a 51 to 42 percent majority, and many say rising gasoline prices have influenced their approval, a poll released Thursday showed. Such support stunned environmentalists, who have counted on opposition from Florida and other coastal states to deflect growing sentiment for offshore drilling among inland and oil state politicians. The U.S. House just last week rejected proposals to open more offshore areas to drilling, but those efforts are expected to continue. “I do believe there is what I consider a seismic shift in opinion among Floridians,” said Dave Mica, executive director of the pro-drilling Florida Petroleum Council. “They’re not fully there yet, but there have been a lot of gains.”

It’s a start. Now only if the politicians in Washington would hear the people. We have enough resources to take care of ourselves and become less dependent on foreign sources of energy. And, no, that doesn’t include ethanol, wind and solar power. I am talking oil and natural gas. All we need is the increased capacity to refine it and the national will to tell the environmentalist wackos — nothing more than a bunch of “watermelons,” green on the outside and red on the inside — to take a flying leap and stop holding this country hostage to fear-mongering.

  • We as a nation cannot continue to turn our backs on our resonsibility to provide for our growing energy needs. There is no other efficient source of energy to replace oil at the present time, and we can drill today with cleaner standards than thirty years ago. We are long over due for action.

  • I wonder if any of the the people who support drilling have visited a south Texas beach. If not, I suggest they make the trip before falling for this scam. The beaches are drenched in an oil based tar that makes the beaches virtually useless. This is a bad idea. The only people that will benefit from this are the oil executives. Florida has the most pristine beaches in the country and they should be protected.

  • I wonder if you’ve ever seen one. The story you tell is sheer hysteria. You clearly are one of the fearmongers.

    Drill. Here. Now.
