CHILDREN AS HUMAN SHIELDS

The moonbattery of the Left just goes on, well, unhinged.

When the Democrats elected to use 12-year-old Graeme Frost as a human shield to bully Republicans into voting to override President Bush’s veto of the BullSCHIP expansion to include families with incomes up to $82,000 and redefine adults between 18 and 25 as “children” to allow more people to gain access to a program designed for poor children, they made the choice to make the Frost family fair game for investigation as to whether they were indeed a “poor” family.

Michelle Malkin reports on the demonization of the critics by both Time magazine and The Hildabeast. Time calls the efforts of bloggers to do the job the Drive By Media used to do as “swift-boating,” using Democrat talking points to make a “news” article, while Shrillary demanded the bloggers lay off the Frost family.

Maybe if the Democrats didn’t elect to use a child as a human shield, the kid and his family wouldn’t be in the crosshairs.

This has been a typical tactic of the Left for some time now. Take an individual deserving of public sympathy and use them for partisan political attacks then howl in righteous anger when someone responds to the attack? Mother Moonbat herself, Cindy Sheehan, anyone? How dare anyone criticize her! She lost her son in battle and as such as earned the right to say whatever she wants without repercussion and reply. How about the Jersey Twats? Their husbands died in 9/11, so they have earned the right to serve as partisan attack dogs against the President without anyone questioning what they say.

They’re doing the same thing with Graeme Frost. More symbolism over substance.

And the talking points are really making the rounds, too, making liberal bloggers sound like parrots. Rawwwwk! Rawwwwk! Rawwwwk! Malkin took it upon herself to do the job the Drive By Media should have done — namely, investigate the Frost family rather than just accept the Democrats’ propaganda. She visited the Frosts’ neighborhood and asked about them. A simple task for an investigative journalist or even a noninvestigative journalist.

The talking points? Malkin is now being accused of being a “stalker” and “stalking” Graeme Frost. From national lefty bloggers down to local ones, looking into the claims of one of the Left’s poster children is now “stalking.”

Give me a break. This is the job the Drive By Media used to do, before it became a lapdog for the Democrats, just regurgitating Democrat talking points. Writing fluff pieces and taking PR-flack photos to gin up public sympathy isn’t journalism.

Mark Steyn refuses to cave to the attack dogs on the Left:

The Democrats chose to outsource their airtime to a Seventh Grader. If a political party is desperate enough to send a boy to do a man’s job, then the boy is fair game. As it is, the Dems do enough cynical and opportunist hiding behind biography and identity, and it’s incredibly tedious. And anytime I send my seven-year-old out to argue policy you’re welcome to clobber him, too. The alternative is a world in which genuine debate is ended and, as happened with Master Frost, politics dwindles down to professional staffers writing scripts to be mouthed by Equity moppets.

Adds Malkin:

A word for all the faux outraged leftists accusing conservative bloggers of waging a “smear campaign:” Asking questions and subjecting political anecdotes to scrutiny are what journalists should be doing.

When a family and Democrat political leaders drag a child down to Washington at 6 in the morning to read a script written by Senate Democrat staffers on a crusade to overturn a presidential veto, someone might have questions about the family’s claims. The newspapers don’t want to do their jobs. The vacuum is being filled.

If you don’t want questions, don’t foist these children onto the public stage.

Fight your battles like adults and stop hiding behind youngsters dragging around red wagons filled with your talking points.

Amen. Don’t use these sacred cows supposedly immune from close examination as human shields to advance your viewpoints then howl in holy rage when someone actually examines them or engages in the arena of public opinion.

At least be man enough to stand up for yourself or back off when your sacred cows are engaged in debate.

Mark Hemingway writes about MCS — Manipulated Child Syndrome — at NRO, saying the only question the Left insists on asking is “Why do you hate children so much?” Kind like asking a guy “Have you stopped beating your wife?” That, of course, is what substitutes for meaningful debate on the part of the Left about the merits of the proposed BullSCHIP program expansion

By the way, in Mexifornia, the sky’s the limit to qualify for BullSCHIP. Tom Blumer at BizzyBlog points out that families with income in excess of $100,000 or more can qualify for BullSCHIP.

In California, then, it appears (based on Democracy Project’s inquiry) that there’s nothing stopping a trust fund baby, if their ONLY income comes from investment returns (i.e., it’s “unearned”), from qualifying for SCHIP! Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie could sit at home and stop boring us with their TV show, appearances, and commercials, have babies by any number of entourage members, and join in the SCHIP party. Is this a great country or what?

That’s right. Under the proposed BullSCHIP expansion, Paris Hilton would have qualified for taxpayer-funded health care when she was under 25. Hey, taxpayers! Feel like paying for Lindsay Lohan’s rehab and other health care expenses? She’s under 25. Bela Pelosi, Dingy Harry and the Democrats think you should.

Not to mention any future kids for Paris, Lindsay and their pals.

Blumer asks:

How about we fix what’s broken in SCHIP and Medicaid before embarking headlong on an ill-advised expansion?

A means-test might be a good start.
