If this doesn’t get your blood boiling, I’m not sure what will.

El Presidente Bush wants a $1.4 billion economic stimulus package and security package passed through Congress … for Mexico.

The package the White House wants is the Merida Initiative.

A reader writes to Michelle Malkin:

We can’t even get our own border straight, and we are going to provide Mexico with funding so they can solve their problem. I doubt the Central Americans are staying very long in Mexico anyway. We know where they are going!

Give that reader a cigar. He/She is certainly in possession of more insight than the leader of the Free World.

The Bush administration has been working on this package with minimal input from Congress. Malkin points out that the State Department has been taking the lead, the same State Department that has bent over backwards to grant visa access to the U.S. to people from nations on terrorist watch lists. Like they care about our national security? Naturally, members of Congress have been excluded from the discussions by the State Department. Why?

Mexico is “sensitive,” you see. Also, according to one expert, “Mexico is very protective of its sovereignty and very worried about any incursion of U.S. security forces or private contractors—like Blackwater—coming in to train Mexicans.” Yeah, they’re worried about incursions and sovereignty.

Not that the administration and Congress have been very good about securing our own borders. We can’t even get a fence built to stop illegal aliens from invading our country. They don’t give a damn about our national sovereignty yet are willing to form over $1.4 billion of our tax dollars to stimulate the Mexican economy and protect Mexico’s southern borders.

Says Malkin:

We can’t finish our own border fence, properly supply our immigration agents and border patrol with all the equipment and resources they need, or get our house in order. Yet, the Bush administration wants to fork over $1.4 billion to Mexico and Central America–with much of it going into the hands of corrupt law enforcement officials and government bureaucrats who have worked tirelessly to undermine our immigration laws

Here’s a good analysis of the Merida Initiative from the Brookings Institute.

Let’s have the debate on this proposal. It’s our borders and national sovereignty that is in jeopardy. Why won’t the politicians in Washington understand that and listen to the American people?
