PROUD OF YOUR COUNTRY

It appears that Michelle Obama, the wife of likely Democrat presidential nominee Osama bin … Osama Obama … Obamamama, opened her mouth and put her foot right in it.

And this one has legs, since it’s getting national attention — except for curiously the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, which failed to report what Michelle Obama said. This shows what the Left, particularly the extreme Left, really thinks of America.

What did she say?

For the first time in my adult lifetime, I’m really proud of my country …

I think Investor’s Business Daily (H/T to Jay Weber) sums it up best here:

One thing the left in our country has done in recent decades is trade in the love beads and the smoldering draft cards for American flags. “We love this country, too!” and “You have no monopoly on patriotism!” are their messages to those who point out their softness on fighting America’s enemies.

But if you watch closely enough, every once in a while you catch a slip. It’s then that the real face of the “forces of change” is revealed, hearkening back to the days of anti-Vietnam War demonstrations filled with radicals ashamed of America.

Michelle Obama provided such a moment this week.

The IBD editorial goes on to list a number of things she could have chosen to be proud of in her adult life, which began in 1982. The national reaction to the 9/11 attacks when for a brief moment Americans did pull together — that is, until the Left saw the chance to score political points by extremely harsh, over-the-top rhetoric which did nothing except embolden our enemies. The leadership role taken by the United States in response to the devastating Indonesian tsunami in 2004. Not mentioned is all the relief work done following earthquakes, famines and other natural disasters around the world.

It does mention this fact:

[A] quick look at the census life expectancy tables show that American blacks in 1982 could expect to live just 69.4 years. Due to improvements in medicine and greater access to care, today it’s 74 years of expected life. She’s not proud of that?

And concludes thus:

Even if she was unaware of all this, which is highly unlikely, shouldn’t the fact that a black woman from the south side of Chicago can graduate from two Ivy League schools itself be enough to make Mrs. Obama proud of such a country?

The fact that it doesn’t indicates a radical mind-set that does not appreciate what makes America great — and a presidency that would be destructive of the country’s greatness.

What it’s reflective of is the snooty, arrogant disdain which the Ivy League and other elites hold the United States in. In their eyes, the U.S. and the U.S. military are the chief sources of evil in the world. They really do hate America, hate the military, hate the people who make the country work and have made it great.

The racially tinged rhetoric from Michelle Obama will do little to unify Americans, as her husband claims to want to do.

Michelle Malkin responds to the race-baiting rhetoric here at National Review Online as well as here. The McCain camp, specifically Cindy McCain, the wife of John McCain, also fires back.

  • Just for the record…she said it twice, and once she said “really proud” the other time, she did not.

“Speaking in Milwaukee, Wisconsin today, would-be First Lady Michelle Obama said, “for the first time in my adult life I am proud of my country because it feels like hope is finally making a comeback.”

Then in Madison, she said, “For the first time in my adult lifetime, I’m really proud of my country, and not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change.”

  • I saw the original statement. She apparently inserted the word “really” as an attempt at damage control.

    It ain’t working.
